The Wizard of Oz-Dark Side Of The Moon entry for UFC 83
Bocek vs. Danzig
Round 1
Huh, I wondered whatever happened to Danzig. Oh wait, this is a different guy, not the metal dude.
Buffer gets cheap heat by speaking French.
I'm drowning my sorrows in a nice 2005 Barbera after the Habs lost. At least the pernil came out great.
Nice wrestling early. Crowd seems smart enough to appreciate it.
Uh oh, Danzig getting pounded but pops out of it
BTW someone tell Dana White he's gonna have to get hotter ring girls to compete with the ladies in Montreal
Crowd is chanting for a guy from Ontario. Guess all Canadians are babyfaces tonight
The match has slowed down, but my wine is delightfully acidic and has a thick, warming mouthfeel. Oh crap I just realized that I have about 2 beers in the fridge. Gonna have to run to the corner before the main event
Danzig comes back late. Scoring will be close
Round 2
Big knee by Danzig but Bocek recovers. Gonna go get beer after this fight.
Bocek is in deep doo doo. Danzig passing the guard eaisly and pounding, but Bocek still surviving
Almost out of the wine
Danzig getting hooks in, may get a choke out of this. Bocek has a big heart to not be done at this point.
Bocek landing punches. This fight is unbelievable for a PPV opener (though there have been several dark matches already).
Half a minute to go. Wow, it looked like it was going to be over a few times this round.
Mrs. DC has it at one round apiece. They're showing replays of that knee. I can't believe Bocek is still standing.
Round 3
Mike Goldberg notest that neither fighter has been submittted. If this were pro wrestling you'd know the finish right there.
Bocek throwing bombs but not connecting much. It goes to the ground again.
Back up but in the clinch. Another knee and Bocek is busted wide open. Don't know if he'll make it.
Time out to check the cut. They're gonna let them finish it and the crowd loves it.
I do like this Barbera quite a bit. At the prices you pay for wines from Piedmont it's not a good habit to get into. Better and healthier that a lot of other things I guess.
Bocek caught in a choke. This has to be it. It is. Wow, what a fight.
And now to the corner. Mrs. DC will type a few things while I'm gone.
The online poll is "Who will win the Serra fight?" Very different from the Top Chef polls on Bravo.
The next PPV is Memorial Day weekend.
I don't recognize either of the guys in the next fight. I don't watch ultimate fighter though.
DC back here. Yes you do. Bisping is the guy who lost the fight we thought he won in London.
Corner had Sam Adams Pale Ale. Almost got Optimator instead but I do have to wake up at some point tomorrow. Also saw that MegaMillions is up to 60 million so I paid my stupidity tax and bought a quick pick. Now for some water to cleanse the palate before switching to the pale ale.
Bisping vs. McCarthy
Round 1
Big shots by Bisping. McCarthy taunts like Sean Avery according the the Mrs.
My bottle opener is in the other room but I don't want to miss this. An Ole chant breaks out, reminding me again that the Habs pissed away a big chance tonight.
Takedown by McCarthy but not much comes of it. Oh wait, maybe an armlock by McCarthy here,
If they dont get busy soon they're gonna get stood up. Nope, now they're out and on their feet on their own.
Crowd is pro-Bisping for whatever reason. Bisping teeing off. I'd be crying like a baby at this point. McCarthy turtling to escape the round. Wow.
They just called it as McCarthy didn't get up at the bell and is holding his arm. He may have a broken forearm. Bisping wins and another Ole chant goes out. Save it for Monday people. Those guys are gonna need it.
Bisping hails from Manchester England. Makes me think of Hair. " Manchester England England, across the Atlantic sea...." That is Hair right? Galt whatshisface?
.
Guess they'll have to show a dark match now.
Damn, Rampage is fighting July 5. Will have to find a bar in Montreal that's showing it. Shouldn't be too hard.
Quarry vs. Starnes
Not a dark match, This is still live.
Starnes is from BC. Guess they loaded the card with Canucks tonight. Smart marketing, Dana.
They're calling Quarry "Rock". Suddenly UFC is the Flintstones.
Sam Adams Pale Ale has a faint hoppiness, not nearly as over the top as most American IPAs tend to be but not as mild as say an Alexander Keith's or other Canadian pale. It's a nice session beer perfect for this late in the evening.
Round 1
Hey, at least that ring girl looks like she might've been at the same table as a cheeseburger at some point in her life. I hate the fixation with anorexic women with big fake boobs.
Suddenly they're running laps in the octagon. Huh?
Not a lot happening here. Some slight boos from the crowd.
Quarry lands some combos at the end. Starnes did nothing but run. Quarry's round.
Round 2
Nothing. Crowd booing. Starnes strategy appears to be the old rope a dope and the crowd isn't buying it. Neither is Quarry who is just following and not trying a lot other than a few leg kicks.
Starnes gets a takedown but Quarry right back up.
Crowd chanting "boring" and booing as the round ends. The BC boy is putting them to sleep. This is the proverbial popcorn match. Hmmm... maybe I will make some popcorn
Round 3
The Mrs doesn't want popcorn. Blast
Still a whole lot of nothing. Good thing the first 2 matches were good otherwise I'd be PO'd right now.
Crowd is absolutely dead now. This will be a decsion for Quarry barring a miracle in the next 2 minutes. One of the least eventful MMA fights I've ever seen.
Quarry lands a knee and some combos. Starnes runs away and Quarry mocks him by doing an exaggerating jogging thing kind of like the running man dance. Starnes flips him off but the crowd cheers. Quarry mocks Starnes at the end by flapping one arm at him. Crowd totally turns on Starnes, booing him viciously. Starnes yells expletives at Quarry the crowd cheers Quarry every time he's on the screen. Quarry wins a unanimous decision, one judge had the fight 30-24. Wow.
Quarry now does a total babyface promo and apologies for the mockery and not finishing the fight. Crowd eats it up. Quarry shows a lot of mic skills here and has the crowd eating out of his hand by the end of the interview. Forrest Griffin shown in the crowd wearing a Habs sweater. Tough night for that. Damn, I need another beer.
Franklin vs. Lutter
Round 1
I made a bit of popcorn anyway. Colorado up 2-1 which brightens my mood a bit.
Lutter has Franklin's back. Not a good start for Franklin
The Mrs. likes the popcorn. I used more oil and more salt than last time so it's healthier as well as tastier, of course. The Mrs just came over and took more as Franklin makes an awesome escape from an armbar. Crowd loves it.
Probably Lutter's round unless they give Franklin points for defense which I've seen ================================================-before.
That last series of = was typed by my cat as she ran across the keyboard to steal some of my popcorn. We are way too indulgent with our animals.
Round 2
Nice knee and head kick by Franklin. He almost finishes but Lutter grabs a leg and slows it down.
Franklin out now, fight is back on its feet. Another knee by Franklin. Lutter looks fatigued as Franklin scores. In the clinch the crowd chants "knee". Lutter looks gassed and is hanging on
Franklin pounding, Lutter down, ref in, TKO. Crowd goes bananas.
Franklin sucks up to the crowd and they respond. Then he thanks God and annoys me. God doesn't care who wins a UFC fight. Does God not love your opponent because he lost? Ah, not the time for a religious spiel. And my beer is empty.
Mrs. flips to the hockey. I am truly blessed to have married a sports fan Still 2-1 Colorado. It doesn't ease the pain of the Habs lost but it's better than nothing.
St Pierre vs. Serra
Crowd pops for St. Pierre's entrance, but they seem a bit burned out after a long night (the dark matches started at 7:30p and it's just after midnight).
Huge boos for Serra. They've done a good job getting him over as the ignorant American heel. Quotes like "Go drink your red wine and watch your hockey Frenchy" and "It's gonna be like Rocky IV except instead of Russia it's Canada, whatever" reinforce the worst stereotypes about Americans and therefore sell tickets. Good work by Serra to help the company. It also helps that Serra is from NY (well, Long Island, close enough for outsiders). Everyone hates New Yorkers. Even other New Yorkers.
Crowd is going absolutely insane during the ring intros. Forget about what I said about them being burned out. This sounds like a Habs playoff game.
Round 1
Crowd is deafening as the bell rings. Flash bulbs popping. St. Pierre takes it to the mat right away.
St Pierre trying the ground and pound, Serra with great D. Crowd starts the Ole chant and St. Pierre lands a big combo before Serra locks him down again.
All GSP right now. Serra doing a great job of defending but GSP is chipping away.
Back on their feet in the last minute. Serra gets taken down again and GSP scoring big. Crowd on its feet. Clearly GSP's round
Serra's face already looks battered
Round 2
GSP dominates for the first minute, then the fight is back up and Serra scores with a few punches but looks gassed.
GSP with another takedown and staying busy with short blows to the head. Serra trying to defend in the guard.
Crowd chanting f*** you Serra as GSP continues to chip away on the ground. Serra tries the guard but GSP passes easily and stays busy.
Knees to the midsection and now blows to the haead. More knees and the ref stops it. GSP absolutely dominant and the crowd has completely lost it. Hope the Bell Centre sounds like that at around 9:30 Monday night. Serra hugs GSP and picks him up in the proverbial display of sportsmanship and finally gets some cheers from the Montreal crowd. This was almost a total GSP squash match. Guess the Serra win in the first bout was a fluke. Then again, maybe they do a 3rd match in the NY area (probably NJ since I don't think the NY State Athletic Commission has sanctioned MMA yet).
GSP thinking like me thanks Serra for the fight, admits the pre-fight trash talk was a work and offers a rematch in NYC. Guess they may have to do a face vs. face build but then again tri-state area sports fans include a fair percentage of xenophobic Neanderthals so the anti-Canada angle could still happen.
Serra being interviewed now has a huge mouse over his left eye and another under his right eye. This was a restuarant quality ass-kicking. Crowd pops for Serra's humility. You gotta love fans who know they're being worked (in terms of the pre-fight hype), buy into it anyway and salute the performers when it's over. That's why Montreal is a great sports town.
They may do a dark match now but I'm not blogging it. Taping in the other room so I'll catch the end of the hockey game and watch it on tape tomorrow. Oh wait, it's over. Avs are in the second round. Cool. Well, thanks to the Mrs for helping out and Bon soir everyone.
